Camargue Ornithological Park and Saintes Maries de la Mer

Today we visited the Camargue National Park, a massive bird sanctuary which also features a huge variety of animal life (see photo of beaver). The bird life is amazing! The park plays host to ducks, swans, herons, kingfishers and many other birds including hundreds of flamingos. We never thought we would see a concentration of flamingos like this outside of Africa.

We then visited the town of Saintes Maries de la Mer (Saints Marys on the Sea) which is right on the Mediterranean coast – which tells you how close we are to the end of this trip. The town is typical of those we have found in the south of France except that its population includes gypsies of Spanish origin. The town market was pretty big and prices were good so Sue was in her element and did some great present shopping!

Tonight is the Captain’s Farewell Dinner, so dressy up time again.  Sue did sneak a look at the menu and not sure whether to have Lobster Thermidor or Chateaubriand.  Ah the sacrifices we have to make!!!  Both Captains are good fun and all the staff seem to get on so well.  They are constantly teasing each other, and the banter is great to see.  It makes the guests seem quite at ease with the staff, and not think it is out of place to ask questions or make throw away comments.  We have buddied up with a couple from Jerrabomberra.  Ray retired as the person in charge of Borambla Sport and Rec in Wagga.  We worked out he would have been there when I took kids there for Theodore and Chisholm.  Canberra is a small place eh???
