Pont du Gard and Uzes

This morning we took a 40 minute drive from Avignon to see the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct dating from the second century BCE. The aqueduct is in reasonably good shape for something of its age and is very impressive. It ought to be given that it consists of over one million stones and used to deliver 35,000 cubic metres of water every day to the 50,000 inhabitants of the Roman towns.  Lots of water for the Roman baths!

We then visited the village of Uzes the centre of which is very well preserved from medieval times and listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. We enjoyed walking the narrow winding streets full of buildings in many different architectural styles from different centuries. Sue enjoyed the market in the main square – but not the prices. Come in suckers … er… tourists J. Yep….saw a beautiful handmade angora scarf that would have been perfect for the Canberra winter, but at over $130 dollars I could buy a new coat!!! Not that I am tight….but…
