Chateauneuf-du-Pape

This morning we took a bus through, you guessed it, more lovely vineyards to the ruins of Chateauneuf-du-Pape i.e. the New Castle of the Popes. The Popes lived in Avignon from 1309 to 1377 and the castle was used by them as a summer residence. Sadly the castle was used by the Nazis as an ammunition storage facility during World War Two and was largely destroyed when they retreated. But the remains are still impressive.

We then visited one of the more than 150 vineyards in this area of the Rhone Valley for wine tasting. Sue worked for Brown Brothers Wines when going through Teachers College so she found it very interesting. Phil is not supposed to drink wine but he decided it could be interesting to participate. So, as instructed, he swirled the various wines in the glasses, sniffed the bouquet and took a very small taste of each. His conclusion? They all tasted like wine. So discriminating!!!
Unfortunately we are having problems loading photos again. Hopefully we can post some of the castle later.
